![]() Hell, technically Paul hijacked my thread. ![]() I was going to do the same.may still if his doesn't pan out.but if it does, then that will have saved me at a minimum a week of work, maybe more. A McDonald's meal is probably more expensive (at least here in Europe it definitely is)! I have no interest in gouging anyone. Then there's the week of in-depth testing (my cinematographer day rate is US$500 a day, which is cheap itself considering) at all hours of the day, countless iterations to get the colour science perfect, a bunch of additional work last night to get it perfect, and you have the gall to advocate ripping it off? I'm the one who first raised the issue of magenta cyan colour splotching, and of the undocumented bug in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015 with 10 bit 4:2:2 footage behaving like 8 bit footage (with a bug report subsequently filed with Adobe). You want to talk about sharing information? Go read the Exposing for V-Log L thread. I started the idea of building this LUT in response to the image quality issues plaguing V-Log L on the GH4. Go and visit my website and see who I am. Perhaps you should pay a bit of attention to things like my joining date of this forum. No one is forcing you to be in this thread, so why dump all over what is essentially a far cheaper way for people to get the same quality as V-Log L, created by a working cinematographer? ![]() ![]() Prior to this if you owned an earlier version you could pay a upgrade fee, but now they expect you to buy the product again by paying the full price over again. I stop upgrading the product after they announced a sale of upgrades and then announced new pricing which did away with upgrades. That speaks volumes and blame lies with the guy that runs the company - Geoff Perlman. The product is now nearly 25 years old yet it remains a insignificant programming language with few users. The current TIOBE list of the most popular programming languages currently lists 150 products and Xojo is not found there. ![]() These rebranding were design to distance themselves from their past misdeeds and reputation of the product. Years later the company rebranded the product Real Studio. The company now called Xojo purchased CrossBasic and rebranded is RealBasic. Until then they might as well not even have Linux support. The product was invented by a third party under the name of CrossBasic. I truly hope that a new release of Xojo will see significant improvement in this area, and make their IDE usable on modern Linux desktops. Until they fix that issue, no other features will really matter. What they have created has the potential to be excellent, but the shoddy Linux support is a major sticking point. I say all this not simply to harp on the Xojo crew. And both respond to button clicks in less than three seconds. Both have embraced Open Source (though to different degrees). with some support for various mobile platforms.īoth LiveCode and Lazarus are powerful – capable of creating robust software. Then there's the completely Open Source Lazarus (which uses Pascal) which also builds applications for Linux, Windows, and MacOS X. And the LiveCode crew even released an Open Source version of their IDE. And they're about to add HTML5 as a target. LiveCode (which uses a Hyper-Card-like language) runs on, and builds for, everything that Xojo does. I'm left feeling like Linux support is an afterthought.Īnd it's not like Xojo doesn't have some serious competition in the “Rapid Application Development” arena on Linux. But considering this is a long-standing issue. The Xojo team says that fixing this is a big priority for 2015 (as is adding support for 64-bit on Linux it can currently only build 32-bit executables). (I say that because it specifically says “10.04 or later” is “Supported.”) But what they really mean is “Ubuntu 10.04 – and NOTHING NEWER THAN THAT – is supported.”Īll of this means that there is a development environment that could be great on Linux. The Xojo system requirements suggest that any version of, say, Ubuntu “10.04 or later” should be supported. The suggested fix for this problem is to run a four-year-old version of Linux. But, they say, it's only an issue with “newer” Linux distros. It turns out that it's been a known issue for quite a long time. I contacted the Xojo team about this and was made aware that this is a known issue. I tested this out on multiple distros on some pretty beefy hardware that can render complex Blender videos without breaking a sweat. Then close your eyes and count to three again.Įvery toolbar button. Ta-Da! You can now see your menu! Now click on any item in that menu (say, a “Save As.” menu item or something). To get an idea of how this can drive a man to the brink, imagine you are clicking on any menu right now. All the while, the entire application is frozen. Here's an example:Ĭlicking on any button or menu inside the Xojo development environment (currently at version “2014r2.1”) takes – I kid you not – roughly three seconds to respond. There's just one major problem – Xojo's Linux support is terrible. ![]() Xojo's language, which is an object-oriented, dot-notationed form of BASIC, has more in common with Java than BASIC, really. And it has quite a powerful framework behind it, with a boatload of features that make building robust applications relatively easy. One only needs to start forking over money when you want to distribute built applications. The IDE itself is free (as in beer) to use. It's cross-platform, with the development environment itself running on Linux, Windows, and Mac. It's Xojo itself that makes me feel so anxious to inflict bodily harm on myself.įor those of you not aware, Xojo actually has a lot going for it. you know it's not because I don't like BASIC. So, when I say that Xojo, a RAD (Rapid Application Development) IDE that uses a syntax of BASIC, makes me want to gouge my eyeballs out with a dull spoon. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Towing or hauling anything over a road that regularly climbs and falls will demand more of your vehicle, and Tow/Haul can help optimize transmission shifting under these more challenging circumstances. It’s not strictly necessary for transporting cargo such as mountain bikes or a small utility trailer, but you may wish to use it in those light-load situations when you’re dealing with hilly terrain. In general, you should engage Tow/Haul mode whenever you’re towing a large trailer or hauling a heavy load. The specifics for your truck can be found in your owner’s manual, or by talking with your dealer or the vehicle manufacturer. ![]() Some Tow/Haul applications even lock out the top gears for similar heat-management reasons. Second, the gearbox won’t shift as much as it would regularly, which helps keep transmission temperatures at a safe level. This reduces the demands on the brakes, which reduces the odds of the brake pads or fluid overheating. On downhills, Tow/Haul mode selects a lower gear for a stronger engine-braking effect. This makes it easier for the vehicle to tow or haul whatever is in the back, albeit at the expense of some fuel economy. First, it will cause the gearbox to upshift later and downshift earlier than usual, keeping the engine in its power band. What Does Tow/Haul Mode Do?Īvailable only in automatic-transmission vehicles (i.e., the vast majority of SUVs and pickups on the market), Tow/Haul mode performs two primary functions. Fortunately, many modern vehicles come with a helpful feature called Tow/Haul mode to ease this strain and make towing less stressful for the driver in the process. Now, let’s move on to our list of tow truck company name ideas.Towing can put your vehicle's powertrain and braking system through a serious workout, as the additional weight of a trailer or a heavy load in the cargo hold requires the engine, transmission, and brakes to work harder. That way, your customers won’t forget your business once they hear about it. However, don’t forget that your name should also be memorable. For example, if you offer towing services, then your name should include “tow” somewhere in it. You should also keep in mind that the name of your tow truck company should reflect your brand image. Regardless of which type of tow truck company you decide to launch, you should always consider the following factors when naming your business: Does the name describe what the business does? Is it easy to pronounce? Can people easily understand what the business offers? ![]() There are many different kinds of tow truck companies, including commercial tow truck companies, roadside assistance companies, auto transport companies, and car rental companies. (Its why I don’t follow my GM oil life monitor and why I’ve never actually looked at what any of my manuals say about transmission service). ![]() ![]() That is the only interest involved in developing those recommendations. The short story is that to me official manufacturer service recommendations are about getting a car past its warranty period. Its not good for the consumer who wants to maximize longevity. This kind of thing is good for car makers since those problems will get more people onto the lots. Its just that they are unlikely to go much past that before beginning problems. Most transmissions these days can go 100K w/out service. Obviously new car sales are what it is all about. 100K also works well for coinciding with having a car paid off, people getting bored or whatever - so then getting a new car becomes more probable. Partly perhaps b/c this number seems burned onto consumer’s minds as well (my dad always told me car’s are only good for 100K). A car that makes it 100K or so without major issue is probably good enough to look ok in terms of quality. ![]() I don’t think this qualifies as a “conspiracy theory” b/c I just call it economics, but in my own interpretation it is contrary to the interests of car makers to shoot for maximum longevity. With European cars the rationale is different they are driven about 1/2 the distance that US cars are, and then most older ones get exported to developing countries, where low pay mechanics can do all those needed overhauls when they are needed. Since the rest of the car has improved immensely over the years, it has increased business for transmission shops. I don’t think it has anything to do with creating a demand for more cars. I believe it was also part of the movement to create a “maintenance free” car. This was at a time when GM still thought it was smarter than its customers. As a result, GM had decided to do away with the dipstick, since he firmly believed that the fluid was “good for the life” of the car. He believed the average person would do more harm than good be checking or trying to check his transmission and perhaps putting in the wrong fluid. His answer was that most people are rather ignorant about checking their transmissions or the need to change the fluid. At an SAE meeeting one time I asked the Powertrain Chief Engineer of GM that very question, not as a consumer of course. ![]() ![]() ![]() : 218 Cortana is described as having a sardonic sense of humor and often cracks jokes or wryly comments, even during combat.
