![]() ![]() ![]() As a level 1 creature, you'd summon it as a level 3 caster. Here's a classic summoning pick for a 2nd rank Summon Animal, the Cave Scorpion. Let's briefly set aside the lack of automatic success here and look at the actual stats of summons. Hence, tying followup maneuvers to Athletics really seems to mess with their balance. This is a pretty major argument as to why minions are useful, since they cannot substitute the damage, tankiness, or reactions of a martial due to their level disadvantage. Hence, in the status quo, minion Strikes can control enemies for their teammates with auto-maneuvers, particularly if using flanking, bonuses from spells, etc. The reliability of hitting with a creature with a minion Strike is not fantastic, but at least viable by the numbers. One of the big attractions of minions created by Summon Animal and the like in Pathfinder 2E is that they give casters the utility of auto-maneuvers, like Grab and Knockdown, on a successful Strike. I think it's worth its own thread to discuss, separate from the linked thread. I'm just wondering what Paizo thinks minions should be doing. Others have made the point that enemies, particularly boss enemies, with Grab are likely to critically succeed at an Athletics check and inflict Restrained instead of Grabbed - an especially debilitating condition.īut thinking from a minion summoner perspective, I'm aghast. I initially reacted to these changes from a capital S Summoner perspective, perceiving it as a significant, but manageable nerf to the class, as you can see in the reveal thread. In a vacuum, it seems that this change hurts players more than enemies, despite the surface reading of this being a nerf to enemies. Thinking about the changes that were revealed to us via Rage of Elements, I've really come to want further context for why these changes were made.
